Community sponsorship
Barclays supports a wide range of global community programmes including Barclays Spaces for Sports. Barclays also recently announced sponsorship of two new cycle schemes in London.
The Barclays Pledge
The Barclays Pledge was established in October 2007, and outlines our commitment to community investment on a global scale.
Barclays promised to invest the equivalent of US$150m and 150,000 hours of employees’ time in 1,500 projects over five years.
Barclays Spaces for Sports
The programme launched in 2004 in the UK and has now delivered 200 community sports sites in partnership with two charities, the Football Foundation and Groundwork.
Barclays Spaces for Sports was extended in 2008 to include more countries where Barclays operates. Sports sites and projects have already been established in South Africa, the United States, Spain and Zambia, with a further site under development in China. More sites and projects will be announced in other countries.
We are also working with the Football Foundation to ensure the 200 UK sites become self-supporting with a sustainable future.
Barclays Cycle Hire and Barclays Cycle Superhighway
Barclays Cycle Hire and Barclays Cycle Superhighway schemes launch across London in July 2010.
The initiatives, backed by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, will provide around 6,000 cycles for hire at 400 special docking stations across nine 'Zone 1' boroughs, providing a network of bikes that can be picked up and dropped off.
The separate Barclays Superhighway project will create 12 designated cycle routes to encourage a switch from other modes of transport and create a safer environment for cycling in London.
“Barclays and its employees are in a position to make a big difference to the communities in which we operate.
"We have a strong track record in this area, but the Barclays Pledge extends the scope and scale of our activities significantly."
Barclays Group Chairman Marcus Agius.
