Hints and tips
Barclays recruitment processes may differ slightly depending on the job you are applying for and the area of the business it is in. Typically they involve an in-depth assessment process, designed to allow you to learn about the Group and make the right decision for your career. Equally, we will be able to accurately assess your skills and capability for the role to which you are applying.
The advice below outlines what Barclays looks for in a job application, how to make your CV stand out and the skills you need to shine at a job interview.
Curriculum vitae (CV)
In most cases your CV is the first thing an employer will see that represents you. Whether you are applying for your first job or are an experienced professional, you need to ensure it is accurate and is the best showcase possible for your career or academic highlights.
- Start your employment history with the most recent position you have held
- Use clear fonts and bullet points, making the content easier to read
- Keep it clear and concise
- Flag up your individual achievements, not just where you have excelled as part of a team
- Use measurable factors to highlight your achievements where possible
- Explain any career gaps and provide reasons for leaving previous employers
- Provide your education history and list any relevant qualifications and training you have completed
- Spend some time making sure the formatting is consistent
- Spell-check your CV before submitting it
- Include when and how you can be contacted.
Interview tips
Preparation is vital to a successful interview, whatever the job role. And don’t let your nerves get the better of you. Remember, there is a reason you have been invited for an interview and this is your opportunity to explain why you are the right person for the job, and find out more about it.
Getting ready
- Always confirm the time and location of your interview
- Check the estimated length of time for the interview and plan to arrive early
- Ensure you know who is interviewing you and what format the interview will take. This will vary depending on the role you have applied for
- Take some time to research the financial services sector and the current challenges it faces. Take a look at the business pages of newspapers or websites for ideas
- Review your CV ahead of the interview. Your interviewer will have it with them and will ask you questions relating to your career history
- Spend time thinking about your strengths and weaknesses and be ready to discuss them
- Prepare your own questions to ask the interviewer.
On the day
- Dress appropriately for the business environment. A business suit is recommended
- Be prepared to explain why you are interested in the role and why you feel you would be successful in it
- Maintain eye contact, confidence and energy levels throughout
- Engage with the interviewer and respond positively to their questions
- Be open and honest
- Don’t be afraid to talk about mistakes you have made in previous roles. If you can reflect on them and explain how you would have done things differently, they can be viewed in a positive light
- Listen carefully to questions and consider your answers. Ask for clarification if you need it
- Keep your answers concise and relevant, referring to specific examples where you can demonstrate your knowledge and experience.
