Regular giving
Barclays colleagues in the UK are supported to make regular donations to charity through their salary. A variation of the regular giving scheme is available to Barclays colleagues in India and Absa colleagues in South Africa.
Matched Payroll Giving
Payroll giving (or Give As You Earn) is the most tax-efficient way of giving to charity because the donation is taken from pre-tax pay. If a colleague donates £10 a month for example, it will only cost them £8 (or £6 for a higher rate taxpayer).
Barclays was one of the first organisations to introduce payroll giving in the UK, with the first donations taken from colleagues’ salaries over 20 years ago in June 1987. In 2002, we committed to matching colleagues’ donations, up to £750 each year. We also pay all administration charges so that every penny of colleagues’ donations, goes directly to their chosen cause.
In 2010, 22,064 or 23% of eligible employees donated through payroll giving, and with Barclays matching, resulted in £3.42 million of unrestricted funding being given to their chosen causes.
Pennies from Heaven
Pennies from Heaven enables UK colleagues to donate the ‘spare’ pennies from their salary each month to be donated to five chosen charities - Action Aid, Marie Curie, Princess Royal Trust for Carers, RNIB and The Children’s Society. These charities represent a selection of the favourite causes that employees choose to raise money for.
Pensioners can also take part in the programme, with all proceeds donated to The Spread Eagle Foundation.
Barclays was a founder partner of Pennies from Heaven in 1999, which has since been adopted by many corporate employers and the NHS.
Throughout 2010, 10,405 UK colleagues and pensioners donated £54,879 to the six nominated charities. Since the programme began, Barclays colleagues and pensioners have donated more than £567,000 – with GiftAid worth an extra £150,000 able to be claimed by the beneficiary charities.
Barclays Giving programme has received external recognition, winning the CAF Companies and Communities Award for Most Effective Stakeholder Engagement, coming third in the Intelligent Giving Ethical bonuses index and qualifying for the Payroll Giving Gold Quality Award for having more than 10 per cent of colleagues participating.
