Sourcing and supplier management

Our sourcing and supplier management process includes criteria for measuring and assessing our suppliers’ sustainability performance and policies.

Our sustainable supply chain questionnaire

During the tendering process we ask suppliers that we deem to have high potential sustainability risks to complete our sustainable supply chain questionnaire. We updated our questionnaire in 2008, in conjunction with other members of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) financial services purchasing forum. It includes questions relating to:

  • business integrity
  • policies and governance
  • labour standards
  • diversity and inclusion
  • health and safety
  • environmental impacts
  • supply chain management.

Where relevant, we involve sustainability subject matter experts during the due diligence stage of our supplier selection process to ensure that our potential suppliers are fully engaged with our sustainability agenda. We also discuss any changes that can be made to end-to-end processes to improve the sustainability of Barclays products and services.

Engagement with suppliers

We engage directly with selected suppliers on sustainability issues, whether as part of our ongoing relationship, or in an effort to address key sustainability issues.
Below are two examples.

Case studies

  • Logistics

IntroShortIn 2009, we worked with one of our logisitics suppliers, TNT, and Lloyds Banking Group, who also use TNT, to reduce the environmental impact of delivering internal mail.

In 2009, we worked with one of our logisitics suppliers, TNT, and Lloyds Banking Group, who also use TNT, to reduce the environmental impact of delivering internal mail.

TNT developed a secure system for both banking groups to share internal mail deliveries, removing 45 vehicles from operation, cutting delivery costs and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1,643 tonnes as at the end of 2009. Barclays, TNT and Lloyds Banking Group received the Partners in Corporate Social Responsibility Award from Premises and Facilities Management magazine in recognition of the scheme.

Judges at Premises and Facilities Management said: “The partnership had clearly measurable results, delivering impressive cost savings and significant environmental savings.”

A similar arrangement with Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland means we also now share air transport for deliveries to the Isle of Man.

  • Corporatewear

IntroShortOur relationship with our corporatewear supplier ensures that not only all country specific legislation is followed but that our sustainability practices have a real impact on peoples lives.

Barclays statement on Supply Chain Sustainability sets out our commitments and expectations of suppliers which includes conducting annual reviews.

The suppliers of Barclays corporatewear are subject to our procurement procedures due to the high risk nature of manufacturing. For example, the RedCollar factory in China which makes the uniforms worn by employees in the UK underwent our supply chain audit in 2009.

The results found employees were being paid a salary rather than a piece rate, and they are also entitled to regular paid holidays usually in excess of four weeks.

Corporatewear supplier directors, garment technologists and designers make regular visits each year to factories looking at productivity, quality of fabric and garments and ways of working.

Our relationship with our corporatewear supplier ensures that not only all country specific legislation is followed but that our sustainability practices have a real impact on peoples lives.
