Barclays in the United Kingdom (UK)
Barclays heritage in the UK dates back to 1690, when its founders John Freame and Thomas Gould started trading as goldsmiths in London.
Fream’s son-in-law James Barclay later joined the business and in 1896 the company partnered 19 other private banks to form Barclays and Company Limited, opening 182 branches across the country.
The business grew rapidly, and by 1926 the bank had 1,837 branches nationwide.
Since then, the company has achieved milestones throughout the UK, from unveiling the world’s first ATM to launching the country’s first credit card. Barclays headquarters remains in London, at 1 Churchill Place – an iconic skyscraper in the Canary Wharf business district.
