Barclays in South Africa

Barclays acquired a majority share in South African-based financial services company Absa, in 2005.

Absa now has 8.7m customers, 800 branches and more than 7,000 ATMs across the country, and is the first South African bank to reach one million internet banking users. As well as personal and commercial banking, Absa provides a range of Barclaycards, and an innovative Cash Passport card, which can be pre-loaded with foreign currency.

Absa has also partnered with Barclays investment banking division Barclays Capital, combining local expertise with Barclays global network to launch Absa Capital.

And Barclays Weath offers private banking and asset management to people in South Africa, and has a team in Johannesburg, the country’s largest city.

Barclays employs 34,000 colleagues in South Africa.

In South Africa, Barclays offers:

  • Retail banking: everyday personal banking
  • Commercial banking: offers business banking services tailored to meet the needs of corporate clients
  • Barclaycard: a range of credit cards are available across the country
  • Barclays Wealth: provides affluent, high net-worth and intermediary clients worldwide with private banking, investment management, fiduciary services and brokerage
  • Absa Capital: affiliated with Barclays Capital: investment banking for corporate, government and institutional clients
