Barclays in China

Barclays Capital operates in China, offering investment banking services to clients across the country.

Barclays entered the Chinese market in the early 1970s and opened its first office in the country in 1981, in the capital city, Beijing. It now also has an office in Shanghai.

In July 2007, Barclays entered into a strategic alliance with China Development Bank (CDB), with CDB becoming a major Barclays shareholder.

In August 2008, Barclays announced it was taking a 19.5 per cent stake in New China Trust, one of China's leading trust companies.

Barclays is sponsoring the UK Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
