Awards and accolades

2009

Deanna Oppenheimer, Chief Executive, Barclays UK Retail Banking, has moved up eleven places from 2008 making her the seventh most influential female executive in the financial services industry in 2009 by US Banker magazine.

Absa Group Chief Executive Maria Ramos was recognised as the world’s ninth most influential businesswoman in Fortune magazine’s 2009 Global Leaders list. Maria, who also serves on the executive committee of the World Bank’s Chief Economist Advisory Panel, was honoured as Outstanding Businesswoman of the Year at the 2009 African Business Awards in London in July.

At a time when the financial services sector faces unprecedented challenges, it’s never been more important for Barclays to have the best people on board. That’s why we’re doing more than ever to reach and recruit talented women and have once again been listed as one of the top places in the UK ‘Where Women Want to Work’ in a poll by The Times newspaper.

Barclays is named one of Britain’s top employers for gay, lesbian and bisexual people in equal rights lobbying group Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index for the fifth consecutive year.

Change Director in our Global Retail and Commercial Banking operations, Johan Fraser was included in Diva magazine’s 2009 list of the 50 most influential lesbians in the UK, which is compiled to recognise the contributions of lesbians across broad fields such as the media, literature, politics and business.
 

2008

Treasury & Risk magazine names Barclays Global Investors Head of Index, Amy Schioldager, one of the top 25 Outstanding Women in Finance.

Deanna Oppenheimer, Chief Executive, Barclays UK Retail Banking, is named one of the 25 most powerful women in banking in 2008 by US Banker magazine. The ranking is based on the performance of 4,700 female executives worldwide. Deanna was also placed in the magazine’s 2007 list.

Barclays is listed as one of the top places in the UK where women want to work in a poll by The Times newspaper. It’s the third year running that Barclays has been placed in the list.

The business also wins an award for the best retention initiative for women.Barclays is named one of Britain’s top employers for gay, lesbian and bisexual people in equal rights lobbying group Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index.

2007

Barclays is voted Best Financial Adviser by readers of Pink Paper, the UK’s leading national newspaper for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. The Pink Paper named Barclays its Top Gay-friendly Financial Institution the previous year.

Barclays wins the Employers’ Forum Disability Standard Chief Executive’s Diamond Award for Accessible Goods and Services, in recognition of the procedures in place to best serve the needs of disabled customers.

2006

Barclays wins a Clarion Award from the International Visual Communications Association for "Sue's Shoes", a DVD about the experiences of a Barclays colleague and the company's Reasonable Adjustments Scheme.

Barclays Legal team wins the Judges' Award for Outstanding Contribution at the Commission for Racial Equality and Law Society Race Equality Awards.
