Barclays Spaces for Sports and Beyond Sport

18 December 2008

"We look forward to receiving submissions from all corners of the world providing real working examples of sport’s unparalleled power as an instigator of social change."

Spaces for Sports has become an official partner of Beyond Sport, the global initiative backed by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Beyond Sport aims to identify, celebrate and support inspirational individuals, groups or organisations seeking to drive positive social change through sport.

The best examples will be selected at the Beyond Sport Awards, with categories covering corporate and social responsibility, change and philanthropy.

A judging panel, chaired by Tony Blair, will announce the winners at the Beyond Sport Summit in London in July 2009.

They will receive substantial funding, long-term support, and networking opportunities to ensure inspirational projects evolve, become fully sustainable and have maximum impact.

Mr Blair said: “We look forward to receiving submissions from all corners of the world providing real working examples of sport’s unparalleled power as an instigator of social change.”

Rachael Barber, Head of Global Community Investment at Barclays, said the association between Barclays Spaces for Sports and Beyond Sport was a natural partnership.

“Together we will strive to demonstrate how much of a positive impact sport can have on the lives of individuals and communities around the world,” she added.

Barclays Spaces for Sports has opened 200 sustainable sports sites across the UK, benefiting more than half a million people, and is now being expanded globally.
