Investing in sustainable communities is an important part of Barclays sustainability strategy. We believe that supporting the communities in which we work is a vital part of our business. Ensuring sustainable communities requires innovative thinking, challenging the old ways and also continuing the good things that are already being done in our communities.

Key to our strategy is working in partnership with other organisations. We bring our financial expertise and skills as well as financial contributions, while we expect from our partners the capacity to deliver programmes that will reach as many disadvantaged people as possible.

This programme is for those not-for-profit organisations that are willing to partner with us to tackle social issues in our communities.

  • Community Partnership Fund

The Community Partnership Fund, which totals £1m, provides grants to organisations through an application process. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis and will be assessed based on a set of clearly defined criteria. Preference will be given to projects that promote financial inclusion.

The aim of this fund is to encourage new ideas in solving the problems faced by organisations seeking to provide sustainable ways of reaching more people in their communities. Successful projects will demonstrate creative thinking and ideas coupled with a well thought-out plan of execution and evaluation. Grants of up to £50,000 per organisation will be awarded.

The fund is open to NGOs operating in Botswana, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Indonesia, India, Mauritius, Pakistan, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

  • Access to volunteers

Barclays has more than 22,000 colleagues in the countries covered by this programme. In 2008, over 70 per cent of them provided their time and skills in more than 1,000 projects.

Colleagues are able to raise funds for various charities and their own donations are matched by Barclays. Offering our time and skills to support initiatives ranging from helping shape an organisation’s marketing strategy to constructing or painting premises for homeless children, is one way we connect on a practical level with the communities in which we have a business presence.

Our colleagues can offer your organisation the skills and time your organisation needs to develop your work.

  • Capacity building with Mango

Many charities and NGOs are often challenged when it comes to providing budgeting and finance.

Barclays has partnered with an organisation called Mango (Management Accounting for NGOs)  to provide bursaries for organisations to attend one of its acclaimed programmes. These courses have been designed to tackle the particular financial and accounting issues pertaining to NGOs.

  • Banking services for development

NGOs and charities have special banking and finance needs. Barclays offers dedicated financial products to help NGOs and charities improve their businesses and continue to deliver valuable services in their communities.
