The children of Jamiyah Children's Home, Singapore
The aims
There is nothing as rewarding as the chance to nurture children and see them thrive through the opportunities of play and exploration
Supporting colleagues to volunteer at a local children’s home.
The story
Colleagues from Barclays Capital in Singapore regularly support the Jamaiyah Children’s Home, which provides residential care for disadvantaged children aged between six and 18.
In 2008, a team of Barclays Capital colleagues took the children to the Singapore Botanical Gardens to celebrate Hari Raya – the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The children were each given disposable cameras and encouraged to take lots of photographs which Barclays Capital volunteers ensured were developed on the same day, so the children could create their own photo albums. For all the children who took part in the visit, this was the first time they had held a camera or taken a photograph.
Results to date
Both the children and the Barclays Capital volunteers benefit from the experience of sharing time together. “There is nothing as rewarding as the chance to nurture children and see them thrive through the opportunities of play and exploration,” said one colleague.
