Big Brothers Big Sisters

The aims

Helping young people gain confidence and realise their academic potential.

The story

New York City-based volunteers from Barclays Capital regularly mentor young people from Park East High School in East Harlem.

The company has partnered with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC Workplace Mentoring Program (BBBS) since 2003. The charity – the oldest and largest youth mentoring organisation in the US – aims to foster positive relationships which have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of students up to 18 years of age.

In 2008, 12 Barclays Capital volunteers took part in the scheme, spending one evening every other week with a group of students over the course of the school year. The students met with employees at Barclays Capital offices providing students with valuable workplace exposure.

Results to date

As part of a project called "Making $en$ of Your Future", the volunteers supported students with their applications for college and financial aid, and helped them put together their résumés. Of the 2008 intake, all passed their New York state exams, and most are set to progress to secondary education.

Barclays Capital also continues to support the charity with fundraising, donating more than US$9,000 (£4,840) by taking part in the BBBS Race for the Kids in 2007. The firm intends to continue this beneficial relationship and to continue providing financial support, too.
