Barclays Spaces for Sports wins Peace and Sport Award

Barclays Spaces for Sports has been named Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative of the Year at the Peace and Sport Awards in Monaco.

The awards celebrate sport’s ability to build bridges between divided communities, and individuals and initiatives that have made a particular contribution through sport to peace and social stability in the previous year.

Barclays award, open to global companies, was presented by Hellen Sambili MP, Kenyan Minister for Youth and Sport, and Wilfried Lemke, the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, in front of more than 400 people from 85 countries.

The ceremony was part of the third Peace and Sport International Forum and was attended by Prince Albert II of Monaco and Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of Peace and Sport.

Hannah Willis, Associate Director for Barclays Global Community Investment, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Barclays Spaces for Sports has been recognised with this award.

"We’re particularly pleased that, since the programme was extended globally last year, we’re now achieving recognition on an international scale for the work being done to revitalise communities in countries around the world where Barclays operates.”

Other guests included high-profile figures from sport, government, business, and non-governmental organisations.

The win adds to a growing list of accolades for Barclays Spaces for Sports.

The programme has previously won the BUPA Healthy Community Award at the Business in the Community Awards of Excellence in 2008, Best Grass Roots Sports Sponsorship at the Hollis Sponsorship Awards 2007, and the Sport England Community Programme Award at the Sport Industry Awards 2007.
