“We are delighted to launch this Barclays Spaces for Sports programme in Spain today.
“The Real Madrid Foundation’s experience in working with young people and the welcome the Mayor of Aranjuez has afforded us will ensure the success of this sports and educational initiative which will facilitate social integration within this community.”
Evelio Acevedo, Director of Corporate Responsibility, Barclays Spain
Barclays Spaces for Sports, in partnership with the Real Madrid Foundation, has launched a three-year initiative in Spain.
The programme uses football training and financial education workshops to encourage closer interaction between youngsters from disadvantaged social and cultural groups in Aranjuez, a city south of Madrid.
Barclays is investing €90,000 (approximately £79,000) and the Real Madrid Foundation will provide coaches and sports equipment.
The Aranjuez City Council will offer sports facilities free of charge.
As part of the commitment, colleagues in Spain will run seminars to help the children and their parents learn more about managing their finances.
To date, Barclays Spaces for Sports has delivered 200 sustainable sports sites in the UK with other sites and projects in South Africa, the United States and Zambia.
