What people say:

“The BMX track is a brilliant sports facility and a great asset to the area. The club offers real opportunities for local kids of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to improve their BMX skills,” says Shanaze Reade, World BMX Champion and Olympic finalist.

“The Barclays Spaces for Sports BMX project has been a real success,” adds Katie Birks, Ponciau Banks Park Officer. “The club offers more structured coaching for young riders. Through our partnership with Welsh Cycling, we also have ‘talent identification’, through which we can identify exceptionally talented riders and channel them into the sport at a competitive level, while mentoring riders of all abilities to improve their skills.”

  • Background

Ponciau in Wrexham, North Wales, is a relatively deprived village, and prior to Barclays Spaces for Sports’ involvement was lacking suitable facilities for young people, resulting in antisocial behaviour and inter-generational tension.

Local young people had been endangering themselves by attempting to build their own bike track. We aimed to provide a safe and sustainable alternative, and a range of sports-related opportunities to benefit the local community.

  • Our contribution

Barclays Spaces for Sports provided a grant to fund the construction of a high quality BMX track, suitable for mountain bikes and BMX activities, and awarded a development fund to secure the sustainability of the site.

  • How the site benefits the community

The Wrexham Rebels BMX Club has been developed in conjunction with the track, strengthening links with the local community. Local schools are encouraged to use the track as part of their regular in-school PE sessions, and training from a local professional coach is also provided.

The club’s membership has increased each year since it launched. Each member has been educated in track maintenance, ensuring the track surface stays safe and useable, and bike maintenance and safety sessions are provided for young people.

The track is also working with the British Cycling Association, enabling local volunteers to gain a coaching qualification.

The Wrexham Rebels BMX Club now competes in local competitions, with further support from the Welsh Cycling organisation.
