Absa, majority-owned by Barclays and one of South Africa’s largest financial services groups has introduced a pioneering service that enables businesses and entrepreneurs to accept payments on the go.

It is a game changing innovation with the potential to transform the way in which entrepreneurs can safely accept offsite payments.

The Payment Pebble is a small card reader device that plugs into a 3.5mm audio input on any mobile smartphone or tablet.

Merchants can accept debit and credit card payments in real-time simply by dipping the card into the Pebble, asking the customer to enter their PIN and complete the transaction using instructions on the accompanying mobile app.

For the first time, the new technology allows PIN entry to be used for magnetic swipe cards as well as chip cards.

Arrie Rautenbach, Absa Head of Retail Markets said the technology would make customers’ lives much easier: “It is a game changing innovation with the potential to transform the way in which entrepreneurs can safely accept offsite payments.”

Available in South Africa from early 2013, the Pebble is set at a highly affordable price, meaning more merchants can afford to accept card payments from their customers anytime anywhere.
